Gloucester is an important center of the fishing industry and popular summertime destination. The book, The Perfect Storm which recounted a massive storm of 1991 had figures based in the town. Scenes from the film adaption (starring George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, and Diane Lane) by the same name were filmed there.
Gloucester’s most famous (and nationally recognized) seafood business was founded in 1849 as John Pew & Sons. In 1957 the name was changed to Gorton’s of Gloucester. The iconic image of the “Gorton’s Fisherman”, are known throughout the country and beyond. Besides catching and processing seafood, Gloucester is also a center for research on marine life and conservation.
